Step 1: Preparation of Documents
Before you start the application process, ensure you have the following documents ready:
- PAN Card of the business or applicant.
- Identity Proof: Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving License.
- Address Proof: Electricity bill, rent agreement, or sale deed.
- Business Registration Document: Incorporation certificate, partnership deed, or other relevant documents.
- Photograph of the applicant (passport size).
- Bank Account Proof: First page of the passbook, bank statement, or a cancelled cheque.
- Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) if applicable.
Step 2: Visit the GST Portal
- Open your web browser and go to the GST portal: GST Portal
Step 3: Initiate the Registration Process
- On the homepage, click on the “Services” tab.
- Under the “Registration” menu, select “New Registration”.
Step 4: Fill in Part A of the Application
Select New Registration.
Fill in the following details:
- Type of Taxpayer: Choose the type of taxpayer (e.g., regular taxpayer, composition taxpayer).
- State and District: Select your state and district.
- Legal Name of the Business: As per PAN.
- PAN: Enter the PAN of the business or applicant.
- Email Address and Mobile Number: These will be used for OTP verification.
After entering the details, click on “Proceed”.
You will receive two OTPs, one on the email address and one on the mobile number. Enter the OTPs to verify.

Step 5: Temporary Reference Number (TRN)
- After verification, you will receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN). Note it down.
- Go back to the GST portal homepage, click on “Services”, then “Registration” and select “New Registration”.
- Choose “TRN” and enter the TRN along with the captcha code, then click on “Proceed”.
- You will receive another OTP on the registered email and mobile number. Enter the OTP to proceed.
Step 6: Fill in Part B of the Application
After OTP verification, you will be redirected to the “My Saved Application” page. Click on the “Edit” icon.
Fill in the required details in the following sections:
- Business Details: Name, PAN, principal place of business, and additional places of business.
- Promoters/Partners: Details of promoters/partners including personal details, identity, and address proofs.
- Authorized Signatory: Details of the primary authorized signatory.
- Principal Place of Business: Address proof, nature of possession, and contact details.
- Additional Places of Business: Information on additional locations, if any.
- Goods and Services: Details of goods and services to be supplied.
- Bank Account Details: Information about the bank account including account number, IFSC code, and proof of account.
- State-Specific Information: Any other state-specific information.
Upload the necessary documents as per the requirements.

Step 7: Verification and Submission
- Once all the details are filled in and documents are uploaded, go to the “Verification” tab.
- Check the declaration, select the authorized signatory, and submit the application using one of the following methods:
- Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
- e-Sign: OTP will be sent to the Aadhaar registered mobile number.
- Electronic Verification Code (EVC): OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number.
Step 8: Application Reference Number (ARN)
- After successful submission, you will receive an Application Reference Number (ARN) on your registered email and mobile number.
- You can use this ARN to track the status of your application on the GST portal.
Step 9: GST Registration Certificate
- Once the application is processed and approved, you will receive the GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) and the GST registration certificate.
- The certificate will be available for download from the GST portal.
